Steel beams or box girders are typically sourced from a local vendor to save on freight.

While most customers use their own installer, Demag offers complete onsite construction and maintenance service.

Demag Cranes has added the KBK II-H steel profile section, with an inside-running rail component, to its KBK light crane system, enabling the construction of monorails and suspension cranes with capacities up to 2t. The KBK II-H profile section is fully compatible with existing profile sections, rail brackets, trolleys and suspension fittings in the KBK II range, despite an installation height 13mm higher than existing KBK II profile sections.

It retains the same width as KBK II profile sections, and will be compatible with curved sections, track switches, turntables and drop sections via a profile adaptor to be released in mid-2011. One important feature is the completely rigid rail joint: its connections are secured using self-retaining nuts, which allows greater planning freedom during system installation.

As the KBK II-H sections can support a full load regardless of track suspension positioning, crane suspension and track suspension clamps can be fitted at any position. In addition, there is no need to use straight profile sections in specific lengths to accommodate pre-defined distances between suspensions.

With the KBK II-H section larger spans or distances between suspensions can be achieved, with support for loads of up to 1.2t possible even with distances of over 6m between suspensions. With the system’s deadweight to load capacity ratio, additional supporting steelwork can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.

Demag Cranes has also made the new section available with 5-pole conductor rails as the KBK II-H-R, which is intended to replace the existing KBK II-T section.

Demag Cranes & Components to Feature Latest Overhead Material Handling Solutions at Modex – Booth #3318

CLEVELAND, OH (October 30, 2011) – Demag will be showcasing its lines of overhead cranes, wire rope hoists, electric chain hoists, workstation cranes, Gottwald port cranes and crane service capabilities at Modex 2012 in booth #3318. The company will be showing the latest additions to its popular KBK workstation crane construction kits that increases load capacity and spanning capability. The new track profile, called KBK II-H can be used for cranes, monorails and workstation cranes. Also featured will be an operational stepless high speed chain hoist designed for the perfect combination of precise positioning and high speed. This hoist is ideal for high duty assembly operations, for example automotive assembly. Demag's complete line of electric chain hoists which are Hoist Manufacturer Institute (HMI) certified will be on display. These hoists can be pendant or radio controlled.

Demag will also launch the standard Coil Master crane product. These are cranes with capacities of 30 to 50 tons that are specifically designed for high performance steel coil handling facilities. The latest in wire rope hoist technology and safety will be featured in the standard monitoring systems of the Demag rope hoist.

The booth will include video monitors illustrating solutions for overhead cranes in the steel coil handling, waste-to-energy, aircraft, concrete pipe and wind turbine manufacturing industries. We'll be introducing an addition to our popular KBK workstation crane construction kits that increases load capacity and spanning capability. The new track profile will work for both suspension cranes and monorails.

The addition to the traditional system is KBK II-H’s steel profile section that will fit between the KBK II and KBK III size sections, while remaining compatible with existing systems. The KBK II-H profile makes it possible to increase distances between suspensions on crane runways for spans of up to 28 feet and loads more than 1200 lb. The section also features a rigid rail joint capable of being subjected to a full load at any track position. The track will continue to provide reliable overhead material handling, smooth running for trolleys, and pendulating suspension that absorbs horizontal movement.

It will feature compatible KBK parts such as travelling, extending and overhead cranes. Demag’s modular crane construction kit is designed for adaptability. The structure is lightweight and the bridges are flexible. Demag says it is relatively easy to assemble.

Media module suspended from Demag hoists floats above stadium

Demag Cranes & Components is always on the ball during the Football World Championship with four hoist units which raise and lower a media module direct above the centre spot of the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The media module performs two tasks. It provides the crowd with images and further information. And when the weather is good, it accommodates the roof panel which normally protects the pitch.

The media module was supplied by Sauernheimer GmbH, which was established as a small electrical company in Nuremberg in 1926. The products supplied by the family-owned company, which has 25 employees, range from purpose-built illuminated advertising panels for indoor and outdoor use, lighting effects systems and stylish decoration accessories to large media modules. These can now be found all over Europe. Sauernheimer installed its biggest LED video display so far with a 144 square metre screen in Dublin.

Hoists provide "moving moments":

A special media module by Sauernheimer is suspended from four hoists supplied by Demag Cranes & Components above the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt am Main. The new arena, which is located where the legendary Frankfurter Waldstadion stadium once stood, was built for sports, concerts, business and major events of all kinds. Depending on how it is used, the FIFA World Championship stadium can accommodate a crowd of up to 55,000. A highlight is its rope and steel membrane interior roof, the largest of its kind in the world. Of the total 37,500 square metres of roof surface, 9,000 square metres are accounted for by the interior roof, which is opened or closed depending on the weather.

The cube-shaped media module is suspended from a central node, where all of the ropes supporting the roof meet above the centre spot. It weighs a total of 38 tonnes. Almost 28 tonnes are accounted for by the mobile part, the rest by drives and the steel superstructure, which connects the cube with the central node. The media module offers a screen diagonal of 8.5 metres. The edges measure eleven metres at the top and 9.2 metres at the bottom. This means that the displays are inclined at an angle of eight to nine degrees, enabling the crowd to see the images and information even better. The brilliant view from all seats is also enhanced by a total of some 150,000 red, yellow and blue LED lamps, which are arranged on each of the display panels which measure almost 31 square metres in size.

Before the roof above the football pitch can be opened or closed, the four Demag hoist units automatically lower the media module on the given command to a height of 19 metres. The cube accommodates the folded interior roof. It then returns to its original height of 26 metres above the pitch. The sequence is reversed in the other direction. It takes approximately a quarter of an hour to open or close the roof.

Travel commands from the control center:

The commands for the lifting, lowering and locking operations come from a control centre. The images and sound, the mobile roof section and the floodlights are all controlled from here. When a corresponding command is issued, the hoists automatically move the media module. Control lamps continuously show the operator the current position of the video module.

Four retaining hooks also offer additional safety when the module is in its parking position under the roof. They can hold the weight of the entire module. In this position, the hoists are completely relieved of the load, which also enables them to be maintained. For safety reasons, the control system monitors the end position of the locking arrangement and issues a release signal when it has been reached. An error message would otherwise result.

Before the module reaches its end position, it reduces its speed from four to 0.6 metres per minute. The speed is automatically reduced two metres before the end position. In addition, Demag fitted all of the hoist units with a second brake and an electronic load monitoring system and with rope sheaves instead of bottom blocks. The maintenance position was set at a height of two metres above the playing field when the media module is lowered. In this way, any risk of personal injury or damage to the pitch heating system is excluded. The media module can also be controlled by means of a control pendant to simplify any maintenance work.

Since people can be present below the suspended load, unlike in industrial applications, the hoist units need to be rated to BGV-C1, which means that a inspection has to be carried out by an expert engineer every year. However, reliable operation of the media module is already ensured by the maintenance performed by the Demag Cranes & Components customer service on an annual basis.

Demag Cranes AG welcomes the announcement by Terex Industrial Holding AG that it will substantially increase the offer price of the voluntary public tender offer it submitted to the shareholders of Demag Cranes AG on 19 May 2011. A complete evaluation of the new offer terms will be presented by the Management Board and Supervisory Board of Demag Cranes AG in a supplementary statement pursuant to Section 27 of the German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (WpÜG) presumably until 22 June 2011. The increase in the offer price from EUR 41.75 to EUR 45.50 per share announced by Terex is part of a Business Combination Agreement signed today by Terex and Demag Cranes after the approval by their relevant boards. The agreement ensures broad operational and strategic autonomy to Demag Cranes even after Terex has acquired a majority interest in the company. The agreement additionally improves the offer document dated 19 May with regard to the intentions and objectives of the possible takeover, particularly with a view to the future strategy of Demag Cranes and the interests of the company’s stakeholders. Moreover, the document includes detailed commitments for the period after a possible integration of Demag Cranes into Terex Group. Demag Cranes’ Chief Executive Officer Aloysius Rauen: “Apart from a significant increase of the offer price, we achieved important assurances by Terex regarding the interests of our employees, which in total significantly improve the original offer.”

Specifically, the two parties agreed on the following points:

After a majority takeover by Terex, Demag Cranes will remain an independent operating segment within Terex Group pursuing its existing business activities. Strategic and operational responsibility for the business will remain with the management board.

Terex fully supports Demag Cranes’ strategy and will back its continued implementation in order to further strengthen the leading position of Demag Cranes in its current business segments. Besides the Management Board’s plan to develop the mid-market segment, this includes further expansion in emerging markets and notably the further pursuance of the planned strategic alliance between Demag Cranes and Weihua in China.

For a period of three years, Terex guarantees that it will not cause Demag Cranes to announce enforced redundancies as a direct result of the transaction. In addition, Terex pledges to fully uphold shop agreements and collective bargaining agreements as well as other employee rights.

Demag Cranes’ headquarters will remain in Düsseldorf. For Demag Cranes’ German production sites Wetter, Düsseldorf, Uslar and Luisenthal Terex gave a site preservation guarantee for five years.

The strong and successful brands Demag and Gottwald will be preserved.

As innovation and technology leader in its industry, Demag Cranes will continue to take responsibility for its research and development activities in the future.

Even after the possible acquisition of a majority shareholding and until the effectiveness of a Domination Agreement, Demag Cranes Group will retain its full financial autonomy, including decisions about the dividend policy.

After the proposed takeover, Demag Cranes will be represented by its CEO in the executive leadership team of Terex Group.

CEO Aloysius Rauen comments: “Also as part of the Terex Group, Demag Cranes will be able to further pursue its clear and successful growth strategy in the integrated structures we have built. We will additionally profit from access to international markets as well as the Terex Group’s network. Therefore, the transaction Terex intends to undertake will create value for all of our stakeholders.”

The new offer price proposed by Terex of EUR 45.50 per share represents a premium of 29.3 per cent over the three-month weighted average share price of Demag Cranes before the announcement of the tender offer and a premium of 53.5 per cent over the price on 6 October 2010, the last day before takeover speculations arose. A complete evaluation of the new offer conditions will be presented by the Management Board and Supervisory Board of Demag Cranes AG in a supplementary statement pursuant to Section 27 of the German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (WpÜG) presumably until 22 June 2011. Pending this opinion, however, the Management Board of Demag Cranes AG is confident based on today’s Business Combination Agreement that it will in total be able to recommend that the company’s shareholders accept the improved offer.

Düsseldorf, 7 June 2011. Demag Cranes has received an order to supply two Mobile Harbour Cranes to Canada. The two identical machines are 4-rope grab cranes for professional bulk handling. Vale Inco Limited (Vale), the second-largest mining and metals company in the world, a new Demag Cranes customer, will be using the cranes for handling nickel and limestone at its terminal in Long Harbour (southeast Newfoundland and Labrador).

“The bulk market offers tremendous potential and has, for some years, been a focal point in our Port Technology segment,” emphasised Thomas H. G HMK 6407 B Mobile Harbour Crane

The G HMK 6407 B Mobile Harbour Crane with the 4-rope grab is a variant of the Model 6 Harbour Crane. Designed to withstand the rigours of high-end use, Model 6 Harbour Cranes are for high-performance applications and thus achieve enhanced handling rates. This 4-rope grab G HMK 6407 B variant has a 50-tonne grab curve in A8 classification and, depending on the local conditions, achieves handling rates of up to 1000 tph. The machine can service bulk carriers up to Capesize.

Four-rope grab cranes for professional bulk handling

The 4-rope grab variant, designed specifically for the professional handling of bulk materials, has become a firm favourite worldwide among terminal operators at universal and special purpose terminals as an alternative to custom-built equipment. G HMK 6407 B for Vale, Canada

The two new G HMK 6407 B Gottwald cranes for Vale are to enter service early in 2012 in Long Harbour in the southeast of Newfoundland and Labrador and will handle nickel and limestone.

Like all other Gottwald Harbour Cranes, these two machines are fitted with the Visumatic® crane management system. Among the many extras included there is an active anti-dust system, a specially customised propping system and a high tower. The scope of supply also includes four large grabs, an automatic spreader and a fixed spreader.

The decision to opt for Gottwald’s 4-rope grab crane was influenced by the convincing state-of-the-art technology available from Demag Cranes and the fact that a large number of these crane variants have been in use worldwide in the most diverse terminals for some years.

The Opportunity:

Blume Steel Service Ltd. is using wire rope hoists on a Demag Crane to transport and handle steel sheets and plates. The Demag double girder overhead traveling crane is "gently" handling heavy steel plates when needed, but also travels fast when required. The customer also depends on a high level of reliability for the crane, which is in continuous operation 24 hours, every day.

The Solution:

Demag 20 Ton DRPRO hoists on a Demag crane. The two hoists are equipped with 2-speed lift, and mounted on a double girder top running trolley. The crane is a top running double girder configuration utilizing a box girder. The application also required that the travel motions be equipped with variable speed for ease when transporting the plates.

· The trolley and bridge speeds are both infinitely adjustable and can change as required by the operator. This allows travel to be fine-tuned to correspond with each individual requirement. This also allows adjustments to occur depending on the need for positioning or production throughput requirements.

· The double girder overhead traveling bridge crane has a total load capacity of 20 tons and can be used to the full capacity in more than one way. The operator can use the system in the simultaneous mode or one hoist at a time in the independent mode. This option is often called an “S&I” option. When the hoists are working together, the controls limit each 20 ton hoists to 10 tons only. When the operator choose independent mode the system renders the other 20 ton hoist inoperable, and only allows the use of one 20 ton hoist at a time for safety.

· The tandem hoists where needed to utilize the customer’s existing magnet spreader beam. The load capacity of the spreader was two times eight tons, and the configuration met the requirement.

Düsseldorf/Beijing, 21 January 2011. Demag Cranes, one of the world’s leading suppliers of industrial cranes and port technology, and the Weihua Group, one of the major crane manufacturers in China, aim to intensify their cooperation and to conclude a strategic alliance in the crane business. Aloysius Rauen, Chairman of the Board of Demag Cranes AG, and Han Xianbao, Chairman and President of the Weihua Group, have signed a letter of intent to this effect in Beijing. As part of the agreement, Demag Cranes will initially acquire a minority interest in the Weihua Group’s crane business. In light of the winwin situation, the Weihua Group has agreed to grant Demag Cranes the option of participating in the industrial management of the Group by taking a majority stake in the medium term. Both companies have agreed on exclusivity regarding further negotiations. Once forces have been combined, Demag Cranes and Weihua will be one of the leading companies in its industry in China.

The crane business of the Weihua Group includes the manufacture and marketing of industrial cranes, harbour cranes and crane components and it is one of the few suppliers in China with panregional representation. The company’s headquarters is in the province of Henan (Changyuan County) in Central China. The Group, which was founded in 1988, has a workforce of 5,000 employees and generated revenue of RMB 2.5 billion (approximately EUR 270 million) with its crane business in 2009. Chairman and President Han Xianbao and his family have a 100 per cent holding in the Weihua Group. The agreement signed stipulates that Han Xianbao will continue to hold a leading position in the Weihua Group in future.

In connection with the letter of intent signed today, Demag Cranes’ CEO, Aloysius Rauen explains: “Our planned strategic alliance with Weihua is a major step for our company. We will be able to strengthen our position in the dynamically growing Chinese market considerably. A 2 ½ day class focuses on proper inspection methods for Demag cranes and provides attendees with a practical understanding of OSHA, ANSI, ASME and CMAA crane codes with an emphasis on how to apply them to Demag cranes. Geared for inspectors, attendees will receive a set of standards and criteria to apply to their inspection method. This session includes an exam.

A 2 day seminar covers new service requirements for Demag DR wire rope hoists and the DC electric chain hoists. It is designed as an update for service technicians who have attended a Demag service seminar in the past 10 years and includes an introduction to IDAPSY and PARCOM software.

The Opportunity

A Demag bridge crane or overhead crane with a Wire Rope Hoist at a metal flooring company manufactures metal floor decking products and associated metal flashings, for use in the fast track construction industry. With a projected output of over 2,500,000 sq feet of metal decking per year, performance and reliability were deciding factors in selecting Demag Cranes & Components to supply the Bridge crane with the Demag Wire Rope Hoist.

The Solution

Demag 10 Ton under running Bridge Crane with a DRPRO Wire Rope hoist on a Demag Bridge crane. The wire rope hoist is equipped with 2 speed lift, low headroom under running style trolley with a top running single girder beam bridge crane or also called an overhead crane configuration. The wire rope hoist requirement was 2 speed lift, but the other travel motions are equipped with variable speed for ease when positioning on cutting equipment.

The Bridge crane overhead crane included the standard travel VFC features, allowing trolley and bridge infinitely variable speed motions that gave the operator the precision required. From a high speed of 120FPM to only a few FPM when needed on the trolley motion, and a fast 160fpm on the bridge to also a few FPM when positioning.

Lift requirement wire rope hoist was standard speed, but trolley and bridge needed positioning capability without compromising overall speed when needed for fast throughput.

The trolley and bridge are able to change speed as required by the operator. The travel on the bridge and trolley are infinitely adjustable by the operator. This allows motions to be fine-tuned to correspond with each individual requirement. The speed and the acceleration on the bridge is adjusted by the operator by changing the pressure exerted on the button of the control station. This configuration allows precise position, but also fast traveling of the bridge crane when required.

The operators have been very pleased with the ease of the bridge crane and the wire rope hoist.

Overall safety of the bridge crane, wire rope hoist and the overhead crane system has improved.

Four-position travel limit switch is standard on the hoist, but optional crane travel limit switches were supplied to stop the trolley and the bridge precisely as required by the customer for the application.
